My favorite day!
Thursday, October 06, 2005
Today was the day that we went to Kauai...our favorite island out of the group! I don't know if it was just because we got to see more of it than any other island or if it truely is the best island of the Hawaiian islands.
The 4 of us, (My brother, SIL, Ian ans I) had not planned any excursions for the day...we had wanted to rent 4 wheelers but the time would not permit it for the place that we had found. Then we wanted to do the Zip line but every place was booked! With nothing planned we got off the baot and headed into town. We checked out a couple of the shops and wandered around trying to decide what to do. Finally we decided to get a taxi. We all got in and the driver asked us where we wanted to go. "We don't know, just take us somewhere cool."
"Well what do you want to see?"
"What is there to see?"
"Everything."
"Ok, take us there."
Realizing that we weren't good at making decisions the driver started to take us somewhere. We toured almost the whole island! First stop was to some beautiful water falls. Then he drove us down by some beach where there are million dollar homes, and showed us some celebrity houses. Then we went up to the light house, which was absolutely beautiful! Amazing views from there.
Back to the car, we went to see Puff the Magic Dragon. It's an island that is shaped like a dragon...really! You can see it. It was too big to get a picture of but trust me it was cool!
then we were going to go swimming at the Hannelai Bay (Spelling?) (lyrics: Puff the magic dragon lived by the sea, and frollicked in the autumn mist on a lanmd called Hannelai...) Get it? This is where the song was based. So we got to the beach but it was starting to sprinkle so we decided to go get lunch instead, to wait it out..
We went to a cute little local place and then hit some shops near by afterward.
Back to the car...
After lunch we really didn't feel like swimming any more so we decided to do some more sight seeing. The driver told us about these caves that they have on the island and Ian said..."Hell yeah dude! I want to do that!" So off we went.
The first cave was a small dry cave that was very shallow. We didn't go back very far because it was very dark and we couldn't see where we were going.
Then the driver told us a story about this wet cave that has like a fresh water lake in it. If you swim back in the cave and under some rocks you will come to this room that is filled with air and there is a small whole in the bottom wall that lets the sunlight from the ocean in creating a blue light throughout the room.
So we got there...hiked up the side of the mountain to the top of the cave, then down into the cave to the lake. None of us were brave enough to go in...except for Ian. The water was FREEZING!!! He decided that he was going to try and find the blue room so he swam back into the cave, under the water...searching.
We were all on the land and I was freaking out! We had no way of knowing where he was or anything.
Finally, he emerges from the back of the cave. I have never seen him so white in my life! He was scared to death!
While searching for the blue room underwater, he came up for air and hit his head on the rocks! There was no air! No way up! He stuck his mouth up just above the water and was able to find a small air pocket to get quick breath...now in complete panic, trying to hold his breath as long as possible he had to find his way back!
He seriously almost died in that cave! We won't be doing that again anytime soon! Thank god that he had just got his scuba licence and was brushed up on some skills that he could use. If it were me, I definately, with out a doubt, would have drown.
So after the horrifying cave experience we headed back to the boat to get ready for dinner and were left with many exciting stories to tell....
